Getting off the app and into a room

A match has a half-life. Every day you spend in the app chat, the odds of ever meeting drop.

The in-app conversation is a waiting room. It has one purpose: establish enough comfort to arrange a meeting. People who treat it as the destination end up with a phone full of pleasant strangers and an empty calendar.

The timeline that works

Faster than that can feel abrupt; much slower and the thread cools. There's no prize for a two-week pen-pal phase.

The honest reason to meet early: you're not deciding whether to date them. You're deciding whether to spend an hour finding out. That's a much smaller decision and it deserves a much smaller build-up.

Numbers, safely

Swap them once a date is actually arranged, not before. If you'd rather not hand out your number yet, a voice or video call inside the app is a perfectly good middle step — and worth doing anyway.

If someone pushes hard for your number, your socials or your address before agreeing to meet, slow down. Wanting to meet is normal; wanting your details without meeting is not the same thing.

The phrases that move it along

"This is much better than the usual app chat — let's continue it somewhere with coffee. Are you around Wednesday?"

Or, more simply: "I'm terrible at texting and much better in person. Drink this week?" Both are honest, both give a day, and both are easy to answer.

When they keep chatting but never commit

Some people are there for the conversation rather than for meeting anyone — sometimes deliberately, often just out of habit. After two vague deflections of a specific invitation, stop proposing. Leave the thread open if you're enjoying it, but stop investing in an outcome they've quietly declined twice.

And after the swap

Don't flood the new channel. A couple of messages to confirm the plan, then save it for the date. The moment you move to texting, the same rule applies as everywhere else: the point is the room, not the phone.
