Meeting someone from an app safely
None of this is about expecting the worst. It's the same logic as locking your door: cheap, quick, and worth doing.
Most first dates are unremarkable. The precautions below cost about five minutes in total and they mean that on the rare occasion something is off, you have options. That's the whole calculation.
Before you go
- Video or voice call first. Ten minutes confirms they're the person in the photos and gives you a feel for how they talk. It also quietly deters anyone with something to hide.
- Search their name. Not a dossier — just checking that a real person with a real life exists.
- Tell someone. Who, where, when, and their profile link. Agree to message them when you're home.
- Keep your own transport. Get yourself there and back; don't be collected from home on a first date.
- Don't share your address or workplace before you've met.
During
Somewhere public, reasonably busy, that you know how to leave. Watch your drink and pour your own. Stay sober enough to make decisions — one drink less than you'd have with friends is a good rule for a first meeting.
Signals worth taking seriously beforehand
- Refusing a quick call, with excuses that keep changing.
- Pushing hard to meet at their place, or yours, straight away.
- Getting irritated when you suggest somewhere public.
- Any mention of money, crypto, or an investment opportunity. This is a scam, without exception.
- Intense declarations within days, with pressure attached.
- Pushing back on any boundary you set, however small.
Any one of those is reason enough to unmatch, and you don't have to explain why.
Afterwards
Message the friend you told. If you don't want to see them again and they're persistent, block rather than negotiate — apps have that button for a reason and using it is not rude.
The tone to hold
Careful and open at the same time. Assume the best about the person, arrange things so you'd be fine if you were wrong, and then relax and enjoy the evening. That combination is available and it's the one that works.
The short version
- Quick call first, then meet somewhere public you can leave.
- Tell a friend the details and check in afterwards.
- Your own transport, your own drink, no home address yet.
- Any pressure about money, privacy or boundaries: unmatch.
